The story of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati
Pier Giorgio Frassati was born in 1901 in Turin, a city in northern Italy surrounded by beautiful mountains. His family was rich and important. His father ran a big newspaper.
Pier Giorgio was full of energy! He loved to climb mountains with his friends and to play jokes on them. His friends loved being around him because he was so cheerful. When they climbed together, they often stopped to pray the Rosary or go to Mass.
But Pier Giorgio had a secret. Every morning he went to Holy Communion, and then he spent his free time helping the poorest families in Turin. He brought them food, coal to keep warm, clothes and medicine. He gave away his own money too. His friends saw him pushing carts piled with things for the poor through the streets, and they jokingly called him the "Frassati Transport Company"! He explained it this way: Jesus visits me every morning in Communion, and I return the visit by visiting the poor.
When he was only 24 years old, Pier Giorgio became very sick with polio, probably caught while visiting sick people. He died five days later. At his funeral, his family was amazed. The streets were filled with crowds of poor people they had never met, people Pier Giorgio had quietly helped.
On the last photo ever taken of him climbing a mountain, Pier Giorgio wrote two words: "Verso l'alto," which means "Upward." That is where he was always heading: up, toward God.
St. Pier Giorgio Frassati was declared a saint on September 7, 2025. He is a patron of young people, students and mountain climbers. We celebrate him on July 4.
What to color
- His hiking clothes: a brown or green jacket, gray knickerbockers, bright socks and brown boots.
- The rope and walking stick: tan and brown, for his love of climbing.
- The rosary: any color. He always kept one in his pocket.
- The mountains: gray rock, white snow and green pine trees.
- The banner: gold or red, with his motto, "Verso l'alto."
- The little cross at the top: brown or gold, because every climb leads to Jesus.
A prayer to pray together
Pier Giorgio said that if we keep God at the center of everything we do, we will reach the end of our journey. Children can pray before a hike, a game or a hard day:
Jesus, help me climb toward you. St. Pier Giorgio, pray for us.
