The story of St. George
About 1,700 years ago, there lived a Christian soldier named George. The Roman emperor at that time ordered everyone to worship the old Roman gods, and Christians were put in prison. George would not give up his faith in Jesus. He bravely gave his life for Christ near a town called Lydda, in the Holy Land. Christians there honored his tomb, and soon people all over the world loved him. The Eastern churches call him the Great Martyr.
Hundreds of years later, people began to tell a wonderful story about George.
Once upon a time, near a town far away, a fierce dragon lived in a lake. The people were terribly afraid of it. One day the king's own daughter, the princess, was sent out to the dragon. She was very frightened.
Just then a young knight rode by on his horse. It was George! The princess begged him to run away and save himself. But George said, "Fair daughter, doubt ye no thing hereof for I shall help thee in the name of Jesu Christ." He made the sign of the cross and rode bravely at the dragon. The dragon was beaten. George told the princess to tie her belt around its neck, and she led it into town as gently as a lamb!
The king and all the people were amazed. George told them about Jesus, and thousands of them were baptized. The king offered George a reward, but George asked only that the king take care of the churches and be kind to the poor.
The dragon story is a legend. It helps us remember that with God's help, good wins over evil. St. George is a patron saint of England and of soldiers, one of the great warrior saints. His feast is April 23.
