Venerable Patrick Peyton (1909–1992), "the Rosary Priest," was an Irish-born Holy Cross priest who founded the Family Rosary in 1942 and led more than 540 Rosary rallies worldwide. He made famous the motto "The family that prays together stays together." Pope Francis declared him Venerable on December 18, 2017; he is not yet beatified or canonized.

Venerable Patrick Peyton (1909–1992), known as "the Rosary Priest," was an Irish-born priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross who spent his life persuading families to pray the Rosary together every day. He is not St. Patrick of Ireland: he is a twentieth-century American priest whose cause for canonization is open. Pope Francis declared him Venerable on December 18, 2017. He made famous the words "The family that prays together stays together."

Who was Venerable Patrick Peyton?

Patrick Peyton was born on January 9, 1909, at Carracastle in County Mayo, the sixth of nine children of John and Mary Peyton. Every night his father knelt on the kitchen floor and led the family Rosary, and Patrick never forgot it. He wanted to be a priest from the age of nine, but schools and religious orders turned him down, one of them because he wasn't good enough at mathematics. He gave up the idea and, like many young Irishmen, set out for America to make his fortune.

From janitor to priest

He and his brother Tom joined their sister in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Before they left, their father made them kneel before a picture of the Sacred Heart and promise to be faithful to Our Lord in America. Unable to find work, Patrick took a job as sexton (the janitor) of the cathedral, and in the silence of the empty church his old call came back. In 1929 he and Tom entered the Holy Cross seminary at Notre Dame, Indiana.

In 1938, while studying theology in Washington, he was found to have advanced tuberculosis. A year later the doctors offered a risky operation or prayer. His old teacher, Father Cornelius Hagerty, told him, "You have the faith, Pat, but you're not using it," and urged him to turn to Our Lady. Patrick prayed to her for a cure, and on October 31, 1939, he knew in his heart that he had been healed. He credited Mary all his life; this cure was never investigated by the Church and is not part of his cause. He was ordained with Tom on June 15, 1941, at Sacred Heart Church at Notre Dame.

The Family Rosary Crusade

Convinced that Mary had given him back his life for a purpose, Father Peyton began the Family Rosary in 1942 while serving as a chaplain in Albany, New York. His goal was ten million homes praying the Rosary. With volunteers he wrote to every bishop he could, then turned to radio. On May 13, 1945, a national broadcast featured Bing Crosby, Archbishop Spellman and the parents and sister of the five Sullivan brothers, who had died together when their ship went down in the war, leading the Rosary.

In 1947 he founded Family Theater Productions in Hollywood. For twenty-two years its radio dramas featured stars such as Jimmy Stewart, Rosalind Russell, Lucille Ball and Raymond Burr, and later it made films and television specials, including a fifteen-part Life of Christ on the mysteries of the Rosary, first shown at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels. Its motto, and the slogan on more than 200,000 billboards, was "The Family That Prays Together Stays Together."

The Rosary rallies

In 1948, at the invitation of Bishop John Kidd of London, Ontario, he held his first Rosary rally. It was the first of more than 540 rallies around the world.

Holy Cross Family Ministries counts about 28 million people at them in all, including some two million each in São Paulo, Brazil, and Manila, in the Philippines. Each rally ended a long campaign of Holy Hours, homilies, hospital visits and pledge cards, by which families promised to pray the Rosary at home.

His death and his cause for canonization

In his last years Father Peyton lived with the Little Sisters of the Poor in San Pedro, California, spending his days in adoration, Mass and the Rosary. On the evening of June 2, 1992, he was too weak to finish his Rosary, and those beside him finished it for him. He died early the next morning, June 3, 1992. His last words were "Mary, my Queen, my Mother."

The cause for his canonization opened on June 1, 2001, in the Diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts, at the request of the Congregation of Holy Cross; he then received the title Servant of God. Inquiries were held in thirty-five dioceses, and the Positio, a 1,300-page study of his life and virtues, was presented in Rome in 2015. On December 18, 2017, Pope Francis approved the decree recognizing his heroic virtues, and he became Venerable Patrick Peyton. Beatification would require a miracle approved by the Church; as of this writing none has been. He is not a saint, and we do not call him one.

He was first buried in the Holy Cross cemetery at Stonehill College in North Easton, Massachusetts. On April 27, 2026, his remains were moved to the Queen of Families Veneration Chapel at the Father Peyton Center nearby. His work continues through Holy Cross Family Ministries and the Family Rosary in many countries.

Praying with Father Peyton

The surest way to honor Father Peyton is the one he asked for: gather the family and pray the Rosary together. Our guide on how to pray the Rosary walks through each step, and our page on Our Lady of the Rosary tells the story of the feast. If a novena suits your family, see the 54-day Rosary novena.

Holy Cross Family Ministries, which promotes his cause, offers this prayer for favors through his intercession:

God, Our Father, your wisdom is displayed in all creation and the power of your grace is revealed in the lives of holy people, who inspire us to trust you more fully and to serve others more generously. In a unique way, you blessed the life and work of your servant, Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C., and made him a fervent apostle of Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary and Mother of us all. Through his intercession, we ask for this favor.… Please grant it, if it is for your honor and glory, through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Favors received through his intercession can be reported to the vice postulator of his cause through FatherPeyton.org. Let us pray that, if it is God's will, the Church may one day raise this faithful son of Mary to the altars.

Frequently asked questions

Is Patrick Peyton a saint?

Not yet. Pope Francis declared him Venerable on December 18, 2017, when he approved the decree on his heroic virtues. To be beatified (called Blessed), a miracle must be attributed to his intercession and approved by the Church; canonization would need a second one. He must not be confused with St. Patrick, the fifth-century apostle of Ireland.

Who said "The family that prays together stays together"?

Father Patrick Peyton made it famous. Vatican News, reporting his declaration as Venerable, says he "was the first to proclaim the phrases 'The family that prays together stays together' and 'A world at prayer is a world at peace.'" It became the motto of Family Theater Productions, which he founded in 1947, and appeared on more than 200,000 billboards.

Why is Father Peyton called "the Rosary Priest"?

Because he spent his fifty-one years as a priest urging families to pray the Rosary together every day, through radio, television, films, billboards and more than 540 Rosary rallies that drew about 28 million people around the world.

Where is Venerable Patrick Peyton buried?

He was buried in 1992 in the Holy Cross community cemetery at Stonehill College in North Easton, Massachusetts. On April 27, 2026, his remains were moved to the Queen of Families Veneration Chapel at the nearby Father Peyton Center.

What miracle is attributed to Father Peyton?

No miracle has yet been approved by the Church for his cause. Holy Cross Family Ministries collects reports of favors received through his intercession and asks that they be sent to the cause. His own cure from tuberculosis in 1939, which he credited to Our Lady, came before his ordination and is not part of the cause.
