Blessed Benigna Cardoso da Silva
Blessed Benigna Cardoso da Silva (1928–1941), called "Menina Benigna," was a thirteen-year-old orphan girl from Santana do Cariri in Ceará, Brazil, who was killed on October 24, 1941, because she refused a young man's advances. The Church recognized her death as martyrdom in 2019, and she was beatified on October 24, 2022, the first blessed of the state of Ceará. Her feast is October 24.
Who was Blessed Benigna Cardoso da Silva?
Blessed Benigna Cardoso da Silva was a thirteen-year-old girl from Santana do Cariri, a small town in the backcountry of Ceará in northeastern Brazil, who was killed in 1941 because she would not consent to sin. The people of the Cariri region have always called her simply "Menina Benigna," the girl Benigna. She was an orphan, raised by two kind women, and she went to school, to Mass and to her parish catechism like any country girl of her time. Pope Francis approved the decree of her martyrdom in 2019, and she was beatified on October 24, 2022, the first blessed of the state of Ceará. We keep her feast on October 24.

An orphan of the Cariri
Benigna was born on October 15, 1928, at Sítio Oiti, a farm near Santana do Cariri, the youngest of the four children of José Cardoso da Silva and Teresa Maria da Silva. She was baptized on October 21, six days later. Her father had died before she was born, and her mother died when Benigna was about a year old.
Two sisters, Rosa and Honorina Sisnando Leite, took in the orphaned children and raised them. They sent Benigna to school and to church, and the biography published by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints describes a girl who loved her studies, went faithfully to Mass and to the activities of the parish, and did the housework for the two older women who had become her mothers.

A girl who said no
When she was about twelve, a young man of the neighborhood began to pursue her. She refused him, and he kept coming back. Benigna did what a sensible child of faith does: she went to her parish priest, Fr. Cristiano Coelho Rodrigues, and told him. He advised her to resist firmly and gave her an illustrated book of Bible stories. The harassment did not stop. It grew more threatening.

On the afternoon of October 24, 1941, Benigna went out to fetch water from a well near the farm. The young man had hidden in the brush along the path and was waiting for her. When she again refused him and fought him off, he attacked her with a machete. She died there, at about four in the afternoon. Her brother found her body after the family went looking for her, and she was buried the next morning in the town cemetery.
Fr. Cristiano wrote the hour of her death into the parish record and called her "Heroine of Chastity." From the start he asked her to protect the children and families of the parish, and the people of Santana do Cariri began to pray at the place where she died. The young man fled, was caught a few days later and was tried. The Dicastery's account adds a detail that is its own small mercy: fifty years later he came back to the place of the crime, repentant.

Martyrdom and beatification
Devotion to Menina Benigna never faded in the Cariri. Pilgrims came to the cross at Sítio Oiti, and in 2005 a memorial opened in town to keep the things that recalled her, among them her water pot and her dress. Her cause was opened by the Diocese of Crato, and on October 2, 2019, Pope Francis approved the decree declaring that she was killed for her fidelity to Christ and to the Church. As in every cause of martyrdom, no miracle was needed for her beatification. Her canonization would require one approved miracle, and none has been approved yet.
She was beatified in the Diocese of Crato on October 24, 2022, the eighty-first anniversary of her death. In the apostolic letter read at the Mass, the Pope declared her "a young lay woman, a martyr" who, keeping the word of God, gave her life to defend her dignity as a woman. She is the first blessed of Ceará and was hailed as the fourth martyr of Brazil.
Symbols of Blessed Benigna in art
Benigna lived in the age of photography, but almost no images of her survive, and her pictures are devotional, not portraits. Look for:
- A clay water pot: she was on her way to fetch water when she was killed, and her pot is kept in her memorial.
- A palm branch: the sign of a martyr.
- A lily: purity of heart.
- A simple white country dress: a girl of the Brazilian backlands, poor and plain.
Feast day, grave and prayer
We keep her feast on October 24, the day she died and the day she was beatified. Pilgrims pray at the cross that marks the place of her death at Sítio Oiti and at the memorial in town. In 2012 her remains were moved from the town cemetery to the parish church, where people now pray at her grave. See also the feast day calendar.
We have not found a widely used English prayer to Blessed Benigna. Let us take her parish priest's own title for her and ask the "Heroine of Chastity" to watch over children and young people, over girls who are pressured or threatened, and over all who suffer violence. Blessed Benigna Cardoso da Silva, pray for us.
